High Commissioner Yamina Karitanyi makes official visit to Jersey

On 27th May High Commissioner Yamina Karitanyi arrived in Jersey to begin a three-day official visit. The visit will strengthen existing ties between Rwanda & Jersey in the areas of dairy development, the arts & financial services.

The engagements began with a meeting with the Chief Minister of Jersey, Senator John Le Fondre. The High Commissioner then spoke with students at Jersey College for Girls to discuss their aspirations and to share the importance of women's empowerment and Rwanda's success story in promoting Gender Equality.

Later in the afternoon High Commissioner Karitanyi delivered a speech at an event to celebrate the extension of the CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women) to Jersey. Jersey's Minister for International Development Carolyn Labey welcomed the High Commissioner and commended Rwanda on "leading the world in the representation of women in public life.. We can learn a lot from Rwanda, and we do thanks to our close engagements in many areas."

During her remarks the High Commissioner spoke on the need to create an inclusive society for women to thrive, adding ''I am grateful we have a country, a nation, a leadership that wants just that, to pick up the pieces and use everyone, women, men and young people to achieve our goals.''

On Saturday 29th May the High Commission met with His Excellency Sir Stephen Dalton, Lieutenant Governor of Jersey at Government House before visiting La Ferme, a working dairy farm with teams from Jersey Overseas Aid, the World Jersey Cattle Bureau and the Royal Jersey Agricultural & Horticultural Society.

The High Commissioner wished a heartfelt thanks to the Government of Jersey for hosting the High Commission. ''We have benefited from fruitful exchanges and look forward to enhanced partnerships between Jersey and Rwanda. To a continued, and exciting journey!''
