Rwanda and The Commonwealth
Rwanda joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 2009 as only the second country to be admitted without any colonial or constitutional links to the UK.
The accession to the Commonwealth in 2009 was testament to the progress that Rwanda has made towards meeting its development goals, which are in line with the objectives set out in the Charter of the Commonwealth. Rwanda has been an active member of the Commonwealth since joining and is currently Chair-In -Office, after taking over from the United Kingdom after the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM2022).
The 26th CHOGM was held in Kigali, Rwanda from 20th - 25th June 2022. First scheduled for June 2020 the summit was postponed due to the global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Commonwealth Business Forum, People’s Forum, Women’s Forum and Youth Forum took place on the sidelines of CHOGM and Rwanda welcomed over 4000 delegates including leaders, businesses and wider civil society who enjoyed fruitful and action-oriented discussions. London was also warmly welcomed to Kigali as the UK's Prime Minsiter Boris Johnson and the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were present for the summit and for bilateral meetings with His Excellency President Paul Kagame.
The Commonwealth Secretariat and Commonwealth Foundation have their international headquarters in London at Marlborough House.
